French Napoleon III Ebonised Side Table

19th century
Description

An attractive late nineteenth-century French Napoleon III ebonised side table, decorated with brass stringing and inset with Sèvres-style painted porcelain plaques.

The moulded top is enclosed by a pierced brass gallery and incorporates a removable cover concealing the original jardinière compartment. The frieze is enriched with gilt decoration and inset with hand-painted porcelain plaques depicting pastoral scenes, while the whole is raised on slender turned and fluted legs united by a shaped cross stretcher centred with a turned finial.

Originally intended as an elegant planter for displaying flowering plants, jardinières of this type are now equally suited as decorative occasional tables or display stands. The combination of the ebonised finish, gilt decoration and painted porcelain gives the piece a refined decorative quality that works particularly well in both traditional and eclectic interiors.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 81cm

Width: 75cm

Depth: 45cm

CONDITION

The jardinière is structurally sound and presents well overall, with the expected marks, knocks and surface wear associated with age and use.

There are localised losses to the decorative brass inlay and stringing, most noticeably to the removable cover and areas of the frieze, together with wear to the ebonised finish and gilt decoration consistent with age. There is historic wear to one of the stretcher joints, although this does not affect the stability of the stand.

The original removable metal liner is no longer present.

Despite these age-related imperfections, the stand retains its attractive proportions, decorative porcelain plaques and elegant overall appearance, remaining an appealing example of late nineteenth-century French decorative furniture.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Pierced brass gallery: cast brasswork of the Second Empire period.
Hand-painted porcelain plaques: pastoral romantic figures in the eighteenth-century Sèvres manner.
Brass foliate inlay and borders: French cabinet work of the late nineteenth century.
Turned fluted legs and stretcher: classic Louis XVI revival styling under Napoleon III.
Rubbed ebonised finish on edges: honest surface wear from long domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late nineteenth-century French Napoleon III side table is constructed from ebonised wood, inset with porcelain plaques, and ornamented with brass elements. The black ebonised finish is complemented by gilt decorations, brass stringing, and hand-painted pastoral scenes on porcelain plaques set into the frieze. A pierced brass gallery encloses the moulded top, which features a removable cover that conceals the jardinière compartment. The table stands on slender fluted turned legs connected by a shaped cross stretcher centred with a turned finial. Localised losses to the decorative brass inlay, wear to the ebonised surface and gilt highlights, and historic wear to one stretcher joint are present. Measuring 81 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, the table functions as a decorative occasional table or display stand in spaces such as a bay window or a living area. It suits both traditional and eclectic interiors, serving to display objects or provide surface space within a home.

Napoleon III furniture, popular during Frances Second Empire in the mid-to-late 19th century, frequently features dark, ebonised timber finishes contrasted with gilt-brass fittings, intricate marquetry, or painted porcelain plaques inspired by earlier French styles.

These stands were typically constructed from hardwoods such as pearwood or beech that were stained black to imitate ebony, then embellished with cast brass galleries, gilding, and hand-painted Sevres-style ceramic or porcelain plaques.

Authentic pieces feature period hand-cut joinery, genuine cast-brass or bronze mounts with age-appropriate patination, natural wear to the dark ebonised surface, and fine detail on hand-painted porcelain components.

Position the stand as an accent piece in a foyer, bay window, or living area, pairing it with botanical arrangements, small sculptures, or modern minimalist art to create visual contrast against the dark timber and brass details.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, keep the piece away from direct heat sources or high humidity, and lightly clean brass or porcelain elements with specialized non-abrasive tools.
