George II Period Mahogany Envelope/hankerchief Or Corner Tea Table

£2,800    $3,747    €3,279
A rare George II period mahogany corner table with drop-leaf to create a square table. A rare and interesting item possibly made to go in a corner or to be stored against a wall until unfolded and brought into use.

Made in England in about 1740 -1750 these unusual tables are sometimes called ''Hankerchief'' Tables. The drop-leaf hangs down behind the table, (or in front if placed in a corner), and can be lifted and supported on a hinged extra leg, to make a very practical square table.

There is also a lockable compartment accessible by lifting the table-top. Stands on turned legs with pad feet. This table is in good original condition and has acquired a lovely, age appropriate patina
