17th Century Oak & Single Plank Elm Refectory Table

17th century
Description

A substantial 17th-century English oak and elm refectory table, the remarkable single-plank elm top raised on a richly carved oak base with bulbous supports, shaped scroll brackets and splayed feet, united by a substantial central stretcher. The single-plank elm top is a particularly appealing feature, displaying pronounced natural figuring together with the rich colour, wear and surface character acquired through centuries of use. Its considerable thickness and gently softened edges give the table a pleasingly substantial appearance. The oak and elm base is of equally strong character, with a pair of boldly carved bulbous supports decorated with repeated arched and lobed motifs. Shaped scroll brackets support the top above, while the uprights terminate in broad splayed feet and are joined by a substantial central stretcher.

The table retains an appealing sense of age throughout, with variations in colour, old marks, wear and irregularities contributing to its character. The combination of the richly figured elm top and architectural carved base gives the piece considerable presence. At just under two metres long, it is a useful size and would make an impressive centre, hall, dining or serving table. A handsome and characterful example of early English country furniture, with the substantial single-plank elm top being a particularly attractive feature.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 84 cm

Width: 197 cm

Depth: 79 cm

Height to underside of table top: 78 cm

CONDITION

The table is presented in good, solid antique condition and is structurally sound and stable. There are numerous marks, knocks, scratches, old losses, surface variations and general wear throughout, consistent with its considerable age and long history of use. The elm top has developed a richly worn and characterful surface with areas of unevenness, old marks and natural movement to the timber although overall it remains remarkably straight and flat. The carved base similarly shows age-related wear, old marks, small losses and natural shrinkage and movement to the timber. These are consistent with the age and nature of the piece and contribute to its established appearance. Overall, the table presents very well as an honest early piece, retaining excellent colour and character and remaining ready for use.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

This seventeenth-century Jacobean refectory table is constructed from oak and single-plank elm in a dark brown timber colour. The rectangular top rests upon thick, heavily carved bulbous pedestals decorated with repeated arched and lobed motifs, shaped scroll brackets, a low central stretcher rail, and broad splayed feet. The surfaces display pronounced natural figuring, unevenness, variations in shade, old marks, scratches, and surface wear acquired through centuries of use, alongside gently softened edges on the thick top. Standing 84 cm high, 197 cm wide, and 79 cm deep, the table provides a substantial surface. In a modern home, this piece serves as an impressive centre, dining, hall, or serving table within a rustic farmhouse interior, standing solidly on the floor as a functional antique furnishing.

A refectory table is a long, narrow wooden table originally used for communal dining in monastic refectories during the Middle Ages, which later evolved into a prominent fixture in 17th-century domestic halls.

These tables were primarily crafted from native hard woods such as solid English oak and elm, held together using pegged mortise and tenon joinery with heavy timber stretchers and carved pedestal supports.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed top surfaces, hand-cut wooden pegs, natural timber shrinkage around joints, and historical wear along the lower stretcher rails where diners rested their feet.

An antique refectory table can be styled alongside modern dining chairs, subtle linear pendant lighting, and neutral linen textiles to create an intentional contrast between historic woodwork and contemporary design.

Apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber, keep the item away from direct heat radiators to prevent wood movement, and wipe up liquid spills immediately using a dry cloth.
