Description

This beautifully woven and decorated storage-bag was made by Baluch nomads in south-western Afghanistan circa 1900.

The face of the bag is intricately woven in weft-substitution technique and the back in plain-weave. The tassels have been lovingly attached with goat-hair braiding and apart from a small amount of fuchsine in some of the tassels, which dates the bag to around 1900, the colours are all natural.

It is in excellent condition.

Baluch storage bags were crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting regions across eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Woven primarily for utilitarian purposes, these bags, such as khorjin or balisht, were designed to store bedding, grain, salt, and domestic goods during nomadic migrations.

These textiles are traditionally hand-woven using hand-spun wool on portable looms. They incorporate flatweave, soumak, or pile techniques, utilizing natural dyes derived from plants and minerals to produce dark indigo blues, rich madders, and natural earth tones, often finished with decorative braided tassels and glass beads.
