A rare English porcelain covered pedestal bowl produced by the Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, circa 1821.
 
Manufactured in Spode''s Felspar Porcelain, introduced by Josiah Spode II in 1821, the piece represents one of the factory''s earliest feldspathic porcelain productions. Spode''s reputation was firmly established after the royal visit of the Prince of Wales in 1806, which led to Josiah Spode II receiving the appointment of Potter and English Porcelain Manufacturer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales.
 
The elegant form is distinguished by exceptionally rare butterfly handles and a matching butterfly finial, both original handles surviving intact. The cover retains its original factory-made ladle notch.
 
Decorated in the Chinoiserie taste, the bowl features hand-painted Chinese figures, flowering trees and garden landscapes on a pale green ground. The interior is fully decorated with a central medallion depicting a child holding flowers, while the rims are finished ...
