These 19th-century Victorian Gaudy Welsh tobacco jars take the figural form of a lady and a gentleman, produced in ceramic and earthenware with hand-painted enamels in cobalt blue, yellow, and white. The pair exhibits fitted lids, with the gentleman wearing a yellow hat adorned with a black bow and the lady wearing a blue bonnet with a feather motif. The hand-painted decoration includes distinct facial features, dark hair, patterned waistcoats, and vibrant jackets, finished in a glossy ceramic glaze. The gentleman figure measures 9 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, while the lady measures 11 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Originally intended for domestic tobacco storage, these figural jars suit placement today upon a living room bookshelf or within a study collection. They show signs of age on the surface glaze and enamelling consistent with historical use. The pieces remain unmarked and derive from the A. & P. Todd Collection, representing traditional English country house ceramics of the period.

Gaudy Welsh and Staffordshire figural wares originated in Wales and England during the nineteenth century to supply accessible decorative ceramics for domestic homes. Characterised by expressive folk designs and bright underglaze patterns, these items often depicted popular cultural figures, professions, and stylized characters.

These tobacco jars were typically slip-cast from earthenware clay and finished with a clear lead glaze. The vibrant decoration was applied using underglaze cobalt blue paired with hand-painted overglaze enamel colors, including iron red, yellow, and green.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces generally lack formal maker marks, featuring unglazed firing foot rims and evidence of hand-applied overglaze decoration. Look for light crazing within the glaze, weight consistent with heavy earthenware, and age-related wear around the inner lid rims.

Display figural jars in pairs on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table alongside contemporary books and minimalist ceramics. Their distinctive colors and graphic shapes provide an engaging visual contrast in modern or eclectic interiors.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using chemical solvents and abrasive scrubbers, as these can wear away fragile overglaze enamel paint and gilding.
