For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A fine and rare Early 20th Century Antique English Edwardian Royal Doulton Porcelain Lobed Cabinet Dish with heavily gilded border and footring, "Cattleya Trianae, also known as Flor de Mayo, { "May Flower" }, or "Christmas Orchid", " painted by David Dewsberry, active at Doultons from 1889 to 1919, having joined the company after training under the Alcocks at the Hill Pottery, Burslem, and having won the first medal ever awarded to a student at the Wedgwood institute. Acknowledged as a master painter of orchids, he studied the plants in the conservatories of the Duke of Sutherland, Joseph Chamberlain and other orchid-growers. A great music lover, he conducted the Burslem Congregational Church choir for 33 years. The church remembered his “unstinted voluntary work which raised the standard of the musical portion of our services to a very high level”. His gravestone at Burslem Cemetery bears the words “gone to join the choir invisible”. This dish, an excellent example of his work in this genre, bears on the obverse the faintly underlined signature of the artist, viz. "D. Dewsberry" , the reverse with the Royal Doulton puce printed backstamp as used from 1902 - 1922 following the granting of the Royal Warrant to the company in 1901, the Gilder's Monogram JB in gilt script, and the title in green script, "Cattleya Triana Var.", { sic }, alongside in black, the code RA2673.B., Ref. Robert Allen Design Studio ~ Pattern Numbers, and the pattern number C9975, Ref. Doulton ~ Pattern Numbers, these latter marks only partially legible, all this together with the impressed Date Code which although faint, appears to read 11 - 06 for 1906.

An Edwardian Royal Doulton bone china cabinet dish dates from the period around 1910, reflecting the English Country House style. The lobed dish features a hand-painted orchid floral study across a pale green ground, bordered by a gilded rim with a Rococo scroll design and pierced handles on opposite sides. The surface displays enamelled pink and white orchid petals with yellow and red throats, alongside green foliage, and the artist's signature is visible near the base of the stems. Measuring 22 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the piece fits neatly on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or hallway for display purposes.

Produced predominantly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Royal Doulton cabinet dishes were crafted as decorative display items rather than utilitarian tableware. Skilled ceramic artists were commissioned to execute botanical studies, landscapes, and portraits on bone china, often finished with heavy gold leaf borders.

Blank bone china forms were cast and fired before artists applied mineral pigment glazes by hand. The piece underwent multiple firings to fix the colour layers, followed by the application of liquid gold trim which was burnished after the final firing.

Authentic pieces feature factory backmarks stamped on the reverse, alongside artist signatures near the base of the painted scene. The presence of painted pattern numbers and impressed date codes further verifies authenticity.

These decorative items can be mounted on display stands within open shelving, arranged in a wall display, or positioned as a focal accent on a console table or sideboard.

Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid water, abrasive cleaners, or chemical solvents, as moisture and friction can wear away hand-applied gilding and enamel paint layers.
