Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Rococo Revival folding screen is a three-panel modesty screen with dark brown carved wooden frames. The upper panels display pastoral oil paintings under a glaze, set below serpentine cresting with detailed rocaille shell carvings at the top. The lower panels are upholstered in yellow ochre velvet, creating a contrast with the dark timber. Visible details include signs of old restoration on the painted panels, curved framing mouldings, and small shaped feet supporting each section. The overall width measures 220 cm, standing 164 cm high and 72 cm wide. In a contemporary interior, this modesty screen suits placement in an empty corner of a living room, bedroom or dressing area to divide a space or soften a bare wall. The panels articulate on hinges to adjust the width and angle of the display according to the room layout. The aged finish and traditional motifs suit period-style interiors seeking historical character and decorative division.

FAQs

A French modesty screen, or paravent, originated as a functional item designed to protect room occupants from draughts and provide privacy while dressing. Over time, these screens evolved into highly decorative interior furnishings featured in grand salons and bedrooms.

These screens were commonly constructed with carved hardwood frames enclosing hand-painted canvas or timber panels alongside silk or velvet upholstery. Steel or brass hinges connect the individual leaves to allow flexible folding and positioning.

Authentic period screens exhibit hand-carved joinery details, natural wear along the hinge points, and signs of age on the painted surfaces or original upholstery. Structural evidence such as hand-turned fittings and period hardware also helps determine age.

A painted modesty screen can be positioned behind a sofa to add height, used as an alternative headboard, or placed in a corner to introduce texture and architectural depth. It can also function to delineate functional zones in open-plan spaces.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the wood frame from warping and the paint from cracking. Dust the surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid solvents on painted or velvet areas.
