This early 20th-century Arts and Crafts plant stand originates from Japan and is retailed by Liberty of London. Formed from solid hardwood with an ebonised black finish, the tall pedestal possesses a slender, upright profile featuring four curved and flared legs. The piece comprises a square carved top surface with a floral border, complemented by a lower tier shelf situated between the legs. Relief carved detailing adorns the top, legs and shelf, while visible signs of age include surface wear and light scuffing on the dark timber. Measuring 76 cm high, 30 cm wide and 41 cm deep, the stand is suited for placement in an empty corner of a sunlit conservatory or a living room. It provides a platform to display potted greenery, small sculptures or trailing plants.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Western design houses such as Liberty & Co. popularized Asian aesthetics through the Japonisme movement. Craftsmanship of this era integrated traditional Eastern carving techniques and asymmetrical motifs with European functional furniture design.

These stands were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as teak or ebonised timber. They feature hand-carved surface decoration, curved organic legs, and mortise and tenon joinery reinforced with central fixed stretchers or lower shelves.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved relief work with slight variations, genuine age-related surface wear, and historic construction marks rather than modern machine screws. Look for ebonised finishes that exhibit natural patination along raised edges and corners.

Position the stand in an unused alcove or beside window light to display architectural foliage, trailing houseplants, or ceramic vessels. Its tall profile adds structural height and graphic contrast when set against light neutral walls.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking. Apply a small amount of neutral microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the ebonised finish.
