This large Edwardian dining table follows a French Provincial style and comes in a warm amber cherrywood. The piece has a rectangular top, plain apron, arched corners, and a frieze drawer with a dark circular pull knob at one end, standing on tapered legs. The timber displays a polished finish with natural grain variations. Measuring 77 cm high, 198 cm wide, and 90 cm deep, it seats eight people comfortably and extends to ten using two hidden leaves stored in the end drawers. Ideal for a spacious dining room or kitchen, the table provides a practical surface for daily family meals and hosting dinner parties.

FAQs

French Provincial cherrywood dining tables originated in the rural regions of France during the 18th and 19th centuries, crafted by regional woodworkers adapting Parisian styles for country homes. They typically feature clean lines, simple aprons, tapered or cabriole legs, and practical additions such as side cutlery drawers.

Solid cherrywood was widely selected due to its fine grain, strength, and rich warm reddish-brown colour that deepens with age. Traditional cabinetmaking techniques employed mortise and tenon joinery, frequently locked with wooden pegs rather than metal fixings.

Authentic examples display hand-planed underside surfaces, irregular pegged joints, and natural patination along the leg bases and top edges. Inspecting beneath the table frame reveals hand-sawn timber marks and oxidisation consistent with historical age.

A cherrywood dining table can be paired with contemporary upholstered chairs or mid-century seating to create a balanced eclectic interior. Complementing the timber tones with simple linen runners and ceramic tableware creates an understated dining arrangement.

Protect the timber surface from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent uneven fading or cracking. Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax will nourish the wood without damaging the original finish.
