This large nineteenth-century Islamic Revival room divider comprises four hinged wooden panels constructed from dark brown hardwood with brass hinges that open in both directions. The screen incorporates intricate geometric mashrabiya latticework panels, turned wood spindles, and carved recessed bottom sections, alongside two inset foxed mirrors positioned within the upper framework. The timber displays a rich dark brown polish with visible age-related wear and tear, including minor losses appropriate for a piece of this period. Standing at 192 cm high, 244 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the divider measures 61 cm across each individual adjustable panel. This substantial architectural screen suits placement in a drawing room, bedroom, or dressing area to divide open-plan living spaces or create private enclosures while adding textural interest and decorative shadow play to an interior.

Mashrabiya is a traditional Islamic architectural element composed of intricately turned wood pieces assembled into geometric lattice patterns. Originating in the Middle East, these screens were designed to filter direct sunlight, reduce heat, and maintain privacy while allowing breeze to flow through interior spaces.

Traditional mashrabiya screens are crafted from dense hardwoods such as teak, walnut, or cedar. The turned wooden components are joined together using precise mortise and tenon or lathe-turned interlocking joints, often assembled without metal nails to allow the wood to expand and contract naturally with atmospheric changes.

Authentic pieces feature individual, hand-turned wooden spindles exhibiting slight variations in size rather than uniform machine-moulded parts. Look for hand-cut joinery, aged patina in recessed areas, hand-forged or early brass hinges, and natural wear consistent with age along the base and joint edges.

A mashrabiya screen can be positioned in open-plan spaces to define separate zones, such as separating a dining area from a living area, while maintaining light flow. It can also be placed flat against a plain wall as a structural focal point or placed behind a bed frame to serve as an architectural headboard.

Dust the intricate latticework regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or a clean, dry brush. Keep the screen away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber warping or cracking, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood and preserve the surface finish.
