Description

A fine Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones and decorated in the celebrated Z4827 pattern from the No. 5 Lustre Range. Introduced in 1914, this design belongs to the earliest phase of Fairyland production and remains one of the most recognisable patterns associated with the series.

The ruby lustre exterior displays rich crimson and burgundy mottling highlighted with gilded Oriental motifs and gold borders. The Mother-of-Pearl Lustre interior is decorated with four colourful butterflies and centred by a gilded rose medallion surrounded by enamelled ornament. The inner rim is finished with the repeating Pan-Fei pattern in gold.

A faint pattern number remains visible on the underside. Although produced until 1929, examples in this ruby lustre colourway were made in limited numbers and are particularly sought after by collectors today. Daisy Makeig-Jones' Fairyland Lustre designs remain among the most celebrated achievements of twentieth-century British ceramics.
