An antique English Victorian Staffordshire pottery figure group depicts an English sailor and soldier titled "Companions in Arms", standing together on a moulded green base. The earthenware piece features a hand-painted enamel finish with bold white, red, and black colours, portraying a soldier in a red tunic, greatcoat, and knee-boots, alongside a sailor in a white uniform holding a pink bundle with black spots. The flatback moulding models the military uniforms and detailed features, all under a glossy glaze. This substantial decorative figure measures 30 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece, the figure brings a striking nineteenth-century military motif to an interior scheme today. The solid earthenware construction sits securely on flat surfaces, while the hand-painted enamel details provide a distinct historical character to living rooms, studies, or libraries. Displayed on a shelf or console table, the piece serves as a direct link to nineteenth-century British military history, commemorating the joint action of the British Army and Navy during the River War.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments manufactured in the Potteries district of Staffordshire, England, primarily during the nineteenth century. They were created as decorative items for domestic interiors, frequently depicting military figures, historical personalities, and allegorical subjects.

These figures were press-moulded from clay slip in ceramic sections, then assembled, glazed, and fired. Many were designed with flat, unpainted rear surfaces intended to sit directly against a wall or mantelpiece, decorated using underglaze or overglaze enamel paints.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid immersion in liquid or using harsh chemicals, as moisture can enter interior firing holes and damage unglazed ceramic surfaces or compromise overglaze enamels.

Position ceramic figures on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard top to introduce historical character to a room layout. Combining ceramic figures with period leather-bound books or brass objects creates a balanced display in contemporary or traditional spaces.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature firing vent holes on the reverse or underside, soft crazing within the lead glaze, and hand-painted enamel details showing age-appropriate surface wear. Original figures are typically unmarked by manufacturers and feature lightweight earthenware bodies.
