Late 18th Century Neoclassical Finely Carved Walnut Lidded Urn, Possibly Italian

18th century
Description

A late 18th century (circa 1790) Neoclassical finely carved walnut lidded urn, possibly Italian.

This urn consists of a lid to the top with turned and carved finial to the top with carved layered leaf decoration below and finely carved outer edge.

This leads down to a carved collar with high relief carved flower decoration and high relief carved vine leaf and grape swag decoration, the swags with tassels to each side, this design also replicated to the back of the urn.

This leads down to a carved leaf decoration and carved stem, all supported on a cricular base with carved decoration to the edge.

There is evidence of small splits and old woodworm (this has been treated) which is to be exptected due to the age of the piece.

This urn is in very good condition for age and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical carved wooden urns are defined by symmetry, classical proportions, and ornamental motifs derived from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, such as drapery swags, floral garlands, acanthus leaves, and fluting.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and lime wood due to their close grain and ability to retain fine hand-carved detail and smooth polished finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-tool marks, minor asymmetries in carved motifs, natural wood shrinkage over time, and a deep patina accumulated from wax polish and age.

Position the urn as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard top alongside contemporary ceramics or marble accents to create visual contrast.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the object near direct heat sources or moisture, and apply a light coat of beeswax polish sparingly once a year.
