Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French carved wood panels, often stemming from the tradition of boiserie, originated as interior wall panelling and cabinet door construction in 17th and 18th-century French chateaux and estates. These carved timber elements were designed to provide both thermal insulation and ornate architectural detail to interior spaces.

Historically, these panels were carved by hand from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood. The process involved hand-chiselled relief carving, tongue-and-groove joinery, and multiple coats of painted gesso finishes that were often rubbed back or layered over time.

Authentic period panels display hand-carving marks, slight asymmetry from manual creation, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain. Original paint finishes typically exhibit authentic micro-cracking (craquelure), layered undercoats, and wear concentrated on raised surfaces.

Carved architectural panels function as structural wall art when mounted symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. They add tactile texture and historical character to neutral contemporary schemes, working equally well framed as standalone art or integrated into custom cabinetry.

Dust the detailed carved surfaces regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemical solvents, or liquid polishes, as moisture can compromise flaky painted finishes and swell the underlying historic timber.
