Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Meiji Period (1868-1912) large scale carved wooden vase of exceptional quality. The globular dense hardwood vase is formed as a flattened oval moon flask shape set upon a pierced carved wood floral decorated base . The overall theme to the main body is of a multitude of native birds in entwined overlapping flocks as well as individual poses, one or two can be seen clutching fish, one is holding what is clearly a toad, many of the birds eyes painstakingly rendered in horn or double horn, a further sign of the absolute quality. This rather imaginative and expertly carved central theme framed within finely stippled borders, the top shoulder overlapped with crisp leaf design, the bold neck rim finely carved with fans and scholars implements. The vase can be firmly attributed to an artist known as Takaaki ( see literature ).

Following extensive research we have managed to trace an almost exact example of our vase, certainly in terms of shape, carving style and size, the only significant difference being the main subject matter .
