Scandinavian Early 20th Carved Walnut Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

Scandinavian early 20th carved walnut desk circa 1920.

Here we offer a beautiful table with neo classical/italian inspiration, which has been made in walnut.

Rectangular top with a 3 part segmented design to the top encased in a walnut border.  fluted apron which houses the 2 concealed shallow drawers, which have small bolts for locking.  raised on a pair of pair of carved and turned supports, applied swags to the bulbous element that links down to the heavily carved scrolling feet.  supports united by a carved floor level stretcher.

Table could also be used for dining or in a reception room, but we think it lends itself perfectly to being a desk.

Fully refurbished in our workshop to bring it back to it's former glory.  re-polished by hand and maintaining that rich walnut colour. 1 repair to veneer on top surface which has been done to a high standard.  couple of very minor ripples to veneer on top surface.

Knee height: 26 1/2"

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century Scandinavian furniture often integrated traditional craftsmanship with historical revival styles, incorporating classical and Neo-Renaissance design elements. Pieces frequently featured detailed wood carving, high-quality timber veneers, and heavy joinery intended to provide both structural permanence and visual grandeur.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and mahogany for structural legs and trestle supports. Modern and historic writing surfaces frequently feature decorative timber veneers arranged in geometric parquetry patterns over solid timber bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-carved or early machine-assisted relief details alongside natural indicators of age, such as oxidisation within deep crevices and minor movement in veneer joints. Inspecting structural joinery underneath the top and examining hardware mountings can confirm early 20th-century origin.

A substantial carved walnut desk functions as a anchor piece when positioned centrally within a home office or study. Combining the ornate dark wood with modern neutral walls, contemporary seating, and minimal lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern utility.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth prevents dust accumulation within carved details. A light application of natural beeswax polish applied once per year maintains timber moisture, while positioning the item away from direct heat sources prevents veneer lifting and timber shrinkage.
