London City Antiques has dated these Victorian Brass Balance Scales to the 1880s.
The original brass weights are present and sit neatly within a fitted mahogany tray, making this a complete and highly usable set.

Day & Millward were well known manufacturers of scientific and weighing instruments in the 19th century, producing reliable equipment for chemists, laboratories and commercial use. Their patented designs were valued for accuracy and durability which adds to the appeal of this piece today.

In its original setting this type of scale would have been used by chemists to carefully measure ingredients for medicines where precision was essential. Today it makes a striking decorative piece while still retaining practical interest.
