Antique Victorian Apothecary Balance Scales Brass Mahogany Day & Millward Complete with Weights

19th century
Description

A fine and complete Victorian brass and mahogany apothecary balance scale by the respected makers Day & Millward Limited, clearly stamped to the beam. A well presented example combining polished brass with a rich mahogany base.

The scale is elegantly constructed with a central column supporting a precision balance arm with twin hanging pans. The original brass weights are present and sit neatly within a fitted mahogany tray, making this a complete and highly usable set.

Day & Millward were well known manufacturers of scientific and weighing instruments in the 19th century, producing reliable equipment for chemists, laboratories and commercial use. Their patented designs were valued for accuracy and durability which adds to the appeal of this piece today.

In its original setting this type of scale would have been used by chemists to carefully measure ingredients for medicines where precision was essential. Today it makes a striking decorative piece while still retaining practical interest.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Apothecary balance scales were precision instruments used by 19th-century chemists and pharmacists to accurately weigh medicinal ingredients, powders, and liquids. Mounted on stable wooden bases, these beam balances relied on calibrated counterweights to ensure exact measurements required for pharmaceutical compounding.

Traditional Victorian balance scales were primarily constructed from solid brass for the beam, pillar, and pans to resist corrosion from chemicals. These metal components were mounted on heavy hardwood plinths, most commonly mahogany or walnut, and accompanied by precision-cast brass weights.

Authentic Victorian balance scales often feature maker marks stamped onto the brass beam or base, such as Day & Millward or official verification marks. Look for age-appropriate patina, hand-cut threads, lead-filled adjustment cavities in the weights, and minor wear on the brass suspension chains.

Victorian balance scales serve as striking architectural accents when placed on an office desk, library bookshelf, or console table. Their warm brass tones and dark mahogany bases complement traditional dark academia, industrial, and eclectic interior schemes.

Dust the brass components regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip the historical patina. The mahogany wooden base can be conditioned using a natural beeswax polish applied sparingly along the grain.
