Description

A striking large-format architectural publication documenting the Nouveau Marché Saint-Germain in Paris, issued in 1816 and complete with its 11 engraved plates. The work is titled Plan, Coupe, Elévation, et Détails du Nouveau Marché S.-Germain, with J. B. Blondel named as architect and A. L. Lusson as inspector, and was printed in Paris by Firmin Didot. It is an imposing and highly decorative survival from the Restoration period, combining architectural draughtsmanship, urban history and early nineteenth-century Parisian design in one substantial folio volume.

The engraved plates are the great strength of the book. They include the general plan, section and elevation, interior views, structural layouts and architectural details of the market complex, all executed with the clarity and refinement one expects from high-quality French architectural printing of the period. As an object, it has strong visual presence and would appeal not only to collectors of architectural books, but also to decorators, designers and buyers interested in Parisian topography and the history of urban planning.

Condition is honest and should be described as externally worn but internally sound. The binding is much rubbed and tired, with notable wear to the spine and boards, and the volume shows warping from age and use. Internally, however, the contents remain complete and the leaves are firmly held; the book does not present as text-block failure. There is foxing and some damp-marking, chiefly visible at the margins, but the engraved material remains attractive and fully usable. A complete copy of this title is distinctly less common than the market would suggest, and survival with all 11 plates materially strengthens its desirability.
