Bow Porcelain Figure of a Lady with Lamb and Flowers, Circa 1760

Description

A delightful antique Bow porcelain figure of a lady beside a lamb, holding gathered flowers in her apron, produced in London around 1760. The figure is painted in coloured enamels with touches of gilding and stands on a low base applied with flowers and foliage.

Figures of this kind reflect the pastoral Rococo taste that was especially popular in English porcelain of the mid-18th century. The underside bears the recognised iron-red anchor and dagger mark used at Bow about 1760.

Bow was among the most important early English porcelain manufactories. Its products were widely admired, and in 1754 Bow is recorded as having sold goods equivalent to approximately £5,017,855 in modern terms. After its peak in the 1750s, the factory declined under financial pressure and changing taste, and in 1776 the remaining assets, moulds and implements were transferred to Derby under William Duesbury.

Made more than 250 years ago by a factory whose life was relatively brief, this is a very appealing surviving example of early Bow and a desirable piece for collectors of English porcelain.
