Derby Porcelain Figure Of Diana With Hunting Dog, Patch Period C.1760–1765

A finely modelled Derby porcelain figure of Diana, the classical goddess of the hunt, accompanied by a greyhound.
 
Executed in soft-paste porcelain and decorated with coloured enamels and gilding, the figure stands on an elegant rococo base with applied flowers and foliage. Diana holds a long bow while reaching towards the quiver at her back, the hound seated beside her. The composition reflects classical representations of the Roman goddess of the chase and became one of the notable mythological subjects produced by the early Derby factory.
 
The model is recorded by Peter Bradshaw in Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848 (pp. 77, 110) as model D27 of the Pale period, later reissued during the Patch period as model E50. Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Muse...
