This nineteenth-century French Empire inkstand combines patinated bronze and gilded bronze with two cut glass inkwells and a central dish. The rectangular base features substantial gilded paw feet, a central chased handle holding twin candle sconces with lion mask terminals, and a finely chiselled running gilt bronze border decorated with putti holding a flaming urn, accompanied by scrollwork relief. Additional visible details include turned glass inkwell tops, intricate foliate scrollwork along the front frieze, and a small split in the brass banding of one inkwell. Measuring 28 cm high, 40 cm wide and 27 cm deep, the piece sits neatly on an office desk or library table. Ideal for a gentleman's study or home office, the inkstand functions as both a decorative centrepiece and a practical writing accessory. The rich bronze and gold colour palette coordinates effortlessly with traditional wooden writing furniture, leather blotters and antique desk accessories. It provides a striking focal point on a partner's desk, executive desk or library reading table, bringing a touch of classical French design to a workspace while offering organised storage for writing equipment and illumination.

A 19th-century French gilt bronze inkstand, or encrier, is a desktop accessory crafted to hold glass inkwells, pens, and integrated candle sconces for evening correspondence.

These items were predominantly constructed from cast patinated bronze, chased gilded bronze (ormolu), and feature heavy cut-glass reservoirs for holding liquid ink.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-chased relief detailing, hand-cut crystal or glass inserts, heavy cast weight, and age-appropriate wear to the gilding on high-touch surfaces.

An antique inkstand serves as an anchor piece when positioned atop a contemporary executive desk, modern console table, or library shelving unit.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes or water, which can dissolve original patination and strip gilded surfaces.
