Mediterranean Terracotta Amphora Turkish Olive Vase Five Pots

19th century
Description

Five antique terracotta pots with twin handles. These earthenware vases have splashes of black, brown glaze at the rims and over the decades, layers of flaky white paint have softened to a beautifully rustic, soft-whitened finish, with desirable patination that captures years of authentic use and aging.

The two outside black splash rims are almost a pair at 61cm tall.

The two in the middle are not a pair but almost the same height at 60cm tall - one with white flaky paint to the bottom half and the other with brown glazing to the top.

The middle vase is the smallest at 57cm tall and faded white chalky paint peeled off in larger areas.

These can also be purchased individually, please enquire.

Larger options also available and other garden furniture items by Doulton Lambeth, J. M. Blashfield, Coalbrookdale and Handyside, please enquire.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Terracotta olive jars, historically known as amphorae, were manufactured across the Mediterranean and Anatolia for storing and transporting liquid goods such as olive oil, wine, and preserved foodstuffs.

These vessels are hand-built or wheel-thrown using local natural clay, featuring unglazed earthenware bodies, structural loop handles, and occasional partial glazes near the rim to assist with sealing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-forming ridges, surface patination from weathering or lime-wash, structural age wear around the base, and minor variations in shape caused by traditional kiln firing.

Terracotta amphorae function as tactile architectural accents when positioned as floor-standing sculptures in empty room corners, beside entryways, or arranged in grouped arrangements.

Clean unglazed terracotta using a dry soft-bristled brush to remove surface dust. Avoid liquid immersion or aggressive chemical cleaners, and protect from freezing weather conditions to prevent spalling.
