This nineteenth-century antique treen tree stem bowl exemplifies rustic folk art design. Made from a hollowed-out section of an exotic tree stem, the vessel has a warm brown colour, a rough natural bark exterior, a live rim edge, and a smooth turned interior. The polished surface displays a rich grain pattern with deep fissures along the bark and a smooth circular opening at the top. Measuring 18 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, the piece sits solidly on a flat surface. In a modern interior, this decorative bowl functions well on a sideboard top, a mantelpiece, or a coffee table. Its versatile form serves practically as a standalone decorative display, an open bowl for small items, or a pot holder for a small indoor plant. The organic textures and warm wood tones integrate easily into rustic farmhouse, traditional, or eclectic domestic settings.

FAQs

Treen literally translates to of a tree and refers to small functional handmade wooden items produced before the widespread adoption of metal, glass, or ceramics. These objects range from domestic utensils and bowls to snuff boxes, reflecting traditional woodworking craft.

Tree stem bowls were typically carved from solid sections of native hardwoods such as oak, elm, beech, or pine. Turning techniques were used to hollow out log sections while retaining the natural outer bark texture.

Authentic treen often demonstrates natural wood shrinkage, slight distortion, and hand-carving or lathe tool marks on the interior. The surface should feature authentic wear patterns, smooth hand polish, and natural wood oxidisation.

Place a treen stem bowl on a minimalist sideboard top or shelf to introduce organic texture. It pairs effectively with contemporary books, matte ceramics, or natural linen elements in a modern rustic setting.

Keep treen items away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent wood cracking or bark loss. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply a light coat of clear beeswax to preserve the wood.
