Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Russian Orthodox icons are sacred panel paintings depicting holy figures, liturgical feasts, and biblical narratives. Traditionally produced for both church iconostases and private home altars, these works utilise specific symbolic conventions and visual layouts to guide contemplative prayer.

Nineteenth-century icons were typically crafted using seasoned wooden boards, often reinforced with rear wooden slats termed sponki. The surface was prepared with linen cloth and layers of gesso before natural earth pigment tempera and real gold leaf were applied.

Authenticity is evaluated through timber construction, wood shrinkage patterns, craquelure within the gesso, and hand-painted Cyrillic calligraphy along the borders. Natural age-related wear to the gilding and pigment oxidation also offer key indicators of age.

Religious icons function as striking cultural artifacts when mounted as single focal points against neutral walls or placed within dedicated gallery groupings. Placing the panel on a dark timber console table or alongside leather-bound books highlights its historic patina.

Icons should be kept in stable environments away from direct heat sources, high humidity, and direct sunlight, which can cause timber warping and paint flaking. Cleaning should be limited to light dusting with a dry, soft camel-hair brush without chemical polishes.
