Seventeenth-century woodcarvings typically feature hand-chiselled details, high-relief profiles of historical figures, and dense native hardwoods like English oak.

These pieces were crafted using solid quartersawn oak, shaped with traditional hand tools such as gouges and chisels, and finished with natural wax.

Authenticity is indicated by tool marks left by hand chisels, natural oxidisation and patination of the wood over centuries, and shrinkage cracks consistent with aged timber.

Mounting a carved wooden relief on a plain plastered wall creates a striking focal point, blending historical texture with minimalist modern aesthetics.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding fluctuating humidity levels, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain.
