Pair 19th Century masons ironstone sauce tureens with matching ladles, of shaped oblong form, featuring scrolled handles and rose-bud finials on the lids, the design is a classic Imari-style pattern, often referred to as Matsumai or Mandalay, they were a standard part of high-end Victorian dinner services used for serving gravies and sauces. Circa 1840.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

Masons Ironstone is a heavy, durable vitreous earthenware patented by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, in 1813. It was created to mimic imported Chinese porcelain at a lower cost, often featuring hand-coloured transfer designs influenced by Asian patterns.

Victorian ironstone was produced by combining slag, flint, Cornwall stone, and clay to create a dense body that resists chipping. Patterns were often transfer-printed onto the body before receiving additional hand-painted enamel details and gilt highlights prior to final firing.

Authentic pieces usually bear impressed or printed maker marks on the underside, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China. They are characterized by substantial weight, a smooth bluish-white or ivory glaze, and intricate Imari-inspired enamel decorations.

Ironstone tureens are frequently used as decorative accents on dining sideboards, inside glazed cabinets, or on kitchen shelving. They add historical texture and colour to traditional, rustic, or modern country interior schemes.
