Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this Victorian Painted Toleware Tray to the 19th Century.

Technique and Historical Context
English Toleware of the mid-Victorian era (circa 1840–1860) reached a level of aesthetic perfection that rivalled fine gallery paintings. Unlike more common papier-mâché, this tray is crafted from heavy-gauge sheet iron. The process involved "japanning"—applying multiple layers of asphaltum-based black lacquer, each kiln-fired at high temperatures to create a luminous, glass-like and incredibly durable surface. This stable substrate allowed master painters to use delicate oil glazes that would have been impossible on less rigid materials.

Artistic Merit and Attribution
The central narrative composition, "Esther Accusing Haman", is executed with extraordinary painterly finesse. The theatrical use of chiaroscuro (light and shadow), the fluid rendering of heavy crimson drapery, and the psychological depth in the facial expressions of King Ahasuerus and Queen Esther are hallmarks of a master hand. The stylistic execution, combined with the distinctive "M" monogram flourish, strongly suggests an attribution to H. Meeson. Meeson was one of the few elite artists of the period capable of translating grand biblical and historical themes onto the medium of lacquered metal with such anatomical precision and grace.

Condition and Rarity
The tray is framed by an exquisite, hand-painted gilded border featuring sophisticated scrolling floral motifs that retain their original warmth and lustre. The rarity of this specific biblical subject—compared to standard floral or landscape scenes—elevates this piece to museum-quality status. It remains in superb antique condition, with minor, authentic signs of age that serve to confirm its 170-year provenance.
