Staffordshire spaniels, often referred to as hearth dogs or Wally dugs in Scotland, originated in 19th-century Staffordshire potteries. Designed primarily as chimney ornaments, these earthenware figures were produced in matching pairs to flank the fireplace mantelpieces of Victorian homes.

These figures were typically made using press-moulds with white earthenware clay. After initial firing, they received a lead glaze followed by hand-painted enamel details, such as russet or black coat markings, and subtle gilded highlights on collars, lockets, and chains.

Authentic Victorian examples usually exhibit press-moulding seams inside a hollow base, a small release hole on the bottom or back, and signs of manual brushwork with age-consistent wear to the gilding. They typically lack maker marks, as many small potteries produced unbranded wares.

Position the pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to create visual balance. Alternatively, style them individually on bookshelves alongside books and decorative objects to introduce historical character to contemporary living spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or brush. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as this can degrade overglaze paint layers and delicate gilt gilding over time.
