This 19th-century Anglo-Indian occasional side table sits on an octagonal folding base and measures 74 cm wide. The dark brown hardwood structure exhibits intricate floral relief carving along the top border and arched leg aprons, alongside repousse metal panels inset into the base sides. A removable embossed copper tray forms the top, decorated with detailed scenes of hunters and lions, while the base panels portray various deities with subtle orange and gold accents amidst the dark metalwork. This piece provides a distinctive surface for a gentleman's library or placement at the end of a sofa in a period or eclectic interior. Visible details include substantial dark timber framework, metallic relief plaques with figural and animal motifs, and a patinated metal top surface showing signs of age. The stable octagonal footprint supports the multi-panel construction without visible modern repairs. The compact proportions allow placement beside seating in reception rooms or studies while offering an accessible display platform for small decorative objects or books.

FAQs

Dust carved surfaces with a soft, dry bristle brush to clear recessed areas, apply microcrystalline wax to preserve the timber finish, and avoid abrasive liquid polishes on aged metalwork.

An octagonal Anglo-Indian table functions well as an accent piece beside seating, pairing effectively with textured natural textiles, brass metalwork, and rich colour palettes.

Authentic pieces feature hand-chiseled relief carving, historic hand-worked joinery, genuine oxidisation on metal components, and deep natural patination across the timber.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense native hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or padauk, and frequently incorporate repousse copper, brass, or bone inlays.

Anglo-Indian furniture originated during the 19th and early 20th centuries, combining traditional British furniture forms with intricate indigenous Indian hand-carving techniques and local hardwoods.
