Anglo-indian Carved Side Table C.1920

Description

Beautiful Anglo-Indian side table with storage, probably produced around Shrinigar in Kashmir c.1920. 24" square top with bone inlaid decoration at the centre surrounded with a fabulous carved design of Chinar leaves (similar to maple leaves), a great symbol of Kashmiri culture and heritage. Square base featuring on carved and pierced panels with Chinar leaves and seeds, set within a carved frame. One side opening to reveal useful storage space inside. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

This Anglo-Indian side table dates from the period around 1920 and is made from dark brown teak with bone inlay. The square top has a central circular bone inlay surrounded by pierced foliate carving, which is repeated in the reticulated panels on all sides of the base. The upright corner posts terminate in simple square feet at floor level, and the carved border decoration frames each side panel. One side opens to provide internal storage space accessed through the hinged cabinet section. The entire piece stands 62 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep.
