What Is A Linen Press?
The word in the title is usually "press": it appears in 786 of 1,270 titles on Sellingantiques, with "linen cupboard" in 509. Both describe the same idea. A cupboard section with two panelled doors, sliding trays or shelves inside, and a chest of drawers underneath. The form grew up in eighteenth century Britain as a bedroom or landing piece, for storing folded linen flat rather than hanging it.
The version you'll meet most often is English mahogany, roughly 1780 to 1840. Mahogany leads the timbers with 506 titles, and "Georgian mahogany" alone accounts for 92. Recurring notes in this group are flame and figured door panels, inlay, bow fronts and sliding trays. "George III" turns up in 94 titles, Regency and Victorian mahogany in a few dozen each.
Around that core sit four other families. Pine cupboards, often painted or waxed, are about one in seven. Where The Range Splits
Timber and figure do most of the work. Flame, figured and burr descriptors, along with satinwood, satin birch and rosewood, cluster in the upper half of what has sold on Sellingantiques. Plain pine and twentieth century oak sit at the bottom. The very top is held by early walnut cabinets on chests and stands, and by satinwood-inlaid George III presses.
Decoration pushes the same way. Inlay appears in 51 titles, carving in 22, and marquetry titles recur among the higher-priced samples. A name helps too, though only two clear three dealers across the whole archive, so nearly all of these come to market unattributed.
Size cuts both ways. Large appears in 48 titles and small in 39, and "dwarf", "slim", "narrow" and "small proportions" recur right across the range: reduced height reads as a virtue, not a discount. Surface is the other divider. "Original paint", "original scumble" and "original trays" sit above the middle, while the many titles offering a piece "to wax" or "to paint" sit low.
