Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Austrian marriage cupboard is an original European Folk Art piece made from pine with a muted green painted finish and iron hardware. The exterior shows hand-painted floral panels with central ochre sections, a pediment cornice, and a scalloped base apron. Exposed iron strap hinges secure the two doors, which display visible surface wear and distressing across the painted decoration. The piece measures 172 cm high, 165 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. Practical storage is provided by the enclosed interior accessed through the double doors. The rustic farmhouse design suits placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living area to hold linens, clothing, or daily household items. The structure disassembles into two sections for straightforward placement within a home.

FAQs

Marriage cupboards, common across Alpine and Central European regions during the 18th and 19th centuries, were traditionally commissioned as part of a brides dowry. Painted by local craftsmen, these armoires served to store household linens and family heirlooms, often featuring initials, production dates, and symbolic floral decorations representing fertility and good fortune.

These cupboards were typically constructed using locally sourced softwoods such as pine or spruce. Joinery was secured with wooden pegs, while hand-forged iron was utilised for strap hinges, escutcheons, and lock mechanisms. The exterior was finished with mineral-based paint pigments applied directly to the timber.

Authentic period pieces display natural wear patterns where hand contact occurs, such as around the keyhole and base edges. Look for hand-planed timber surfaces on the back panels, pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-forged iron hardware, and natural paint crazing or oxidisation consistent with age.

A painted marriage cupboard functions well as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or dining space. Placing the piece against a neutral wall allows the historic paintwork to stand out, while pairing it with clean-lined contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Maintain painted pine furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or the paint finish from flaking, and avoid liquid cleaning chemicals or abrasive polishes that could strip historic pigments.
