Introduction

Antique Storage Cupboards

Enclosed storage furniture, boarded or panelled boxes fitted with doors, made for the house since the late medieval period. Early ones held food and livery; later ones held linen, clothes and everything else. Specialised versions such as the corner cupboard, the linen press and the two-part housekeeper's cupboard grew up as rooms themselves became more specialised from the seventeenth century on.

Four timbers carry the category. Oak, mahogany and pine each appear in around a fifth of titles, and the bare word cabinet in rather more. The likeliest piece you'll meet is a single- or two-door standing cupboard in one of those woods. Corner cupboards are the most repeated named form, at ninety-six titles, arriving both wall-hung and floor-standing and often bow-fronted. Linen presses follow, doors over a chest of drawers, with sliding trays inside the upper part.

Stripped pine is the archive's signature. A long run of listings uses the shorthand "to wax/paint", meaning stripped and ready for a finish, and pine accounts for the bulk of what has sold on Sellingantiques. Alongside it sit painted Continental and Scandinavian cupboards, Swedish work above all, plus French armoires, Welsh oak press cupboards and two named as deuddarn.

Dating skews nineteenth century and Georgian, though roughly half of it is a bracket rather than a year: "19th Century", "Victorian", "18th Century", "Georgian". Tighter decade tags cluster in the twentieth century. Some titles claim earlier still, oak court cupboards put at the 1580s, and those are the dealer's own attribution. Filed under the same heading you'll also find banks of drawers, apothecary and collectors' cabinets, tallboys, bedside cabinets, cocktail cabinets and tansu.

What sets them apart

The Range

Timber and surface do most of the work. Plain pine and plain oak sit through the lower and middle of the range; flame and figured mahogany, burr walnut, satinwood, birds eye maple, kingwood and rosewood cluster at the top. Surface pulls the same way: titles specifying original paint, scraped paint or simply "in paint" sit high, while stripped pine sold to wax or paint sits low to middle.

Scale matters in the two-part forms. Full housekeeper's cupboards, breakfront cases and complete linen presses with both halves intact sit above the dwarf, low and hanging versions. Decorative work lifts a piece in the same way, with inlaid and carved examples common enough to be a pattern, and marquetry, parquetry and ormolu-mounted side cabinets among the highest sampled titles.

Pairs are commoner than you'd guess, forty titles of them, from bedside cabinets to matched eighteenth-century Italian walnut corner cupboards, and a pair sits well above two comparable singles. The very top of the range is held by French and Chinese work, monumental red lacquer cupboards and marquetry side cabinets, rather than by the English oak and pine that make up the bulk.

Questions people ask

Antique Storage Cupboards: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a court cupboard?

An early oak form with an open or partly enclosed tiered structure. Court appears in fifteen titles.

Some sampled titles attribute court cupboards as far back as the 1580s, earlier than the dated field on Sellingantiques runs. That dating is the dealer's own.

Which timbers turn up most?

Oak, mahogany and pine dominate, each in roughly a fifth of titles, with cabinet the single commonest word overall.

Walnut appears too, often as burr walnut veneer, along with satinwood, birds eye maple, kingwood, rosewood and Scandinavian birch.

Are painted cupboards common in this category?

Painted work runs through the listings, with painted in seventy-two titles and paint in fifty-four. Much of it is Continental: Swedish, Scandinavian, Baltic, Hungarian, Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Irish.

Scandinavian painted work is the most distinctive non-British origin here and sits consistently in the upper half of the range.

How old are most storage cupboards listed?

The dated field runs from 1700 to 1940, with 269 listings carrying a clean year. The bulk is nineteenth century and Georgian.

About half the dating is a bracket rather than a date, with era labels like "19th Century" and reign labels like "Victorian" standing in for a year. Tighter decade tags cluster in the twentieth century, the 1920s especially.

Do unusual one-off cupboards appear?

Regularly. Sampled titles include a smokers' cupboard, a railway ticket cupboard, a dug-out oak metamorphic cupboard and a window-seat boot cupboard.

Trade and medical pieces show up as well: a dentist's instrument case, a set of seven small medical carrying chests, and a skeleton cupboard complete with skeleton.

Are cupboards ever sold in pairs?

Yes, and more often than you'd expect. Pair appears in forty titles.

They run from bedside and pedestal cabinets through to matched eighteenth-century Italian walnut corner cupboards, and a pair carries well above the equivalent singles.
