What Are Georgian Cupboards?
Two forms carry the category. Corner cupboards, triangular in plan and made to fit the angle of a room, account for a little over a third of the titles, hanging on a wall or standing on the floor. Mahogany clothes presses come next, roughly a sixth, with "linen press" the usual wording.
The one you're most likely to meet is the bow-front hanging corner cupboard in oak or mahogany. Dozens of near-identical listings read that way, and they fill the lower half of the range almost to the exclusion of anything else. Mahogany appears in 646 titles, oak in 434, with pine, walnut, elm, fruitwood and yew in small numbers.
Around those two sit small bedside and pot cupboards, often in matched or near pairs, wall and hanging cupboards, wardrobes and housekeepers' cupboards. A country oak strand runs through the whole grouping, strongest in Welsh vernacular naming: 64 titles say Welsh, and deuddarn, bread and cheese, food, livery, tack, spice and court cupboards all turn up, alongside pieces named to Cardiganshire, Montgomeryshire, Anglesey, Yorkshire and Devon.
Dating is loose by the dealers' own account. Only 262 of 1,421 listings carry a clean year; 675 say simply "Georgian" and 221 "18th Century". The dated field also runs forward to 1960, so Georgian-revival and "Georgian style" cupboards of the 1900s to 1930s share the heading with 18th-century originals. About 155 come to market a year on Sellingantiques, listed by 249 different dealers.
Where The Range Splits
Scale and form do most of the sorting. Small oak hanging corner cupboards sit at the bottom in numbers. Full-height and architectural standing corner cupboards, seven-foot examples, housekeepers' cupboards and cabinets on stands sit at the other end, and the highest-priced piece in the samples isn't a cupboard in the usual sense but a burr elm and burr yew demi-lune commode.
Timber and figure move a piece up. Flame mahogany appears in 29 titles, walnut in 46, and burr walnut, burr elm and burr yew cluster near the top, against plain oak and pine at the bottom. Decoration works the same way: inlaid in 78 titles, painted in 55, with satinwood banding, marquetry, chinoiserie and japanning in the upper samples, and country cupboards in original paint well up the range too.
Within the oak, a named region counts. Welsh naming and county attributions gather in the upper half, as do housekeepers' cupboards, several of them painted. For bedsides, pairs matter: "pair" appears in 67 titles, and matched bedsides, pedestal cupboards and tray-top commodes recur in the top quarter.

What is the most common type?

Non-British pieces are the rarest thing in the grouping. Single Italian, Dutch, German and Maltese walnut examples appear against 102 titles that say English.
