What is the most common type?

The bow-front hanging corner cupboard in oak or mahogany. Corner appears in 532 titles, hanging in 142, and "hanging corner" in 88. These small wall-mounted cupboards occupy the lower half of the range in numbers, with many listings worded almost identically.

Which timbers turn up most?

Mahogany leads with 646 titles, then oak at 434. Pine follows at 71 and walnut at 46. Elm, fruitwood and yew appear in small numbers, usually on pieces higher up the range where the figure is burr.

Are these all genuinely 18th century?

No. The dated field runs from 1700 through to 1960, and includes 1920s, 1900s, 1910s and 1930s buckets. That means Georgian-revival and "Georgian style" cupboards sit in the same category as 18th-century originals. Titles and dates sometimes disagree: a "Georgian" title dated 1870 appears in the samples.

How precise is the dating on listings?

Usually not very. Only 262 of 1,421 listings carry a clean year. Most give a period instead: 675 say "Georgian", 221 "18th Century", 129 "1800s" and 120 "19th Century". Regency accounts for 25. Inscribed dates are almost absent. A carved oak and inlaid wall cupboard dated 1763 appears once, and a court cupboard dated 1723.

Do Welsh cupboards appear often?

More than you might expect. 64 titles say Welsh, 43 of them "Welsh oak". Alongside them come deuddarn and cwpwrdd deuddarn cupboards, bread and cheese cupboards, and pieces named to Cardiganshire, Montgomeryshire, Anglesey and Carmarthenshire.

Are there unusual forms in the archive?

A few one-offs sit outside the main branches: a set of eight fruitwood spice drawers, a pine bank of forty drawers in original paint, a plate-warmer pedestal and a chemist's apothecary run of drawers. Non-British pieces are the rarest thing in the grouping. Single Italian, Dutch, German and Maltese walnut examples appear against 102 titles that say English.
