Georgian Elm & Walnut Corner Cupboard

18th century
Description

An Extremely Charming George I Period Burr Elm And Walnut Bowfronted, Wall Hanging, Corner Cupboard, Having Superbly Figured Doors With Attractive Crossbanded And Inlaid Decoration, Retaining Original Engraved Brass Hinges And Lock Escutcheons, Enclosing Three Fixed Shelves.

This extremely lovely corner cupboard is very much a cut above the norm. Boasting wonderfully figured veneers and elegant inlaid decoration to the doors it really stands out from the crowd and it also retains its original brasswear which is another nice feature as this is particularly nice.

Overall the cupboard has also retained a lovely rich colour and patina which of course adds to its overall allure.

It is common to find late 18th and early 19th century mahogany bowfront hanging corner cupboards, albeit it of varying qualities and designs, however it is extremely rare to find these earlier elm and walnut examples which are far more decorative.

From a practical point of view the corner cupboard is an incredibly functional item of furniture, allowing you to not just create elegance in an otherwise empty space, but also practical strorage.

As with all items which we offer for sale this corner cupboard has been inspected and attended to by our highly skilled, specialist antique furniture restorers before being placed on sale and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in the best possible condition when purchased and placed into the home or office.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian corner cupboard is a space-saving storage cabinet crafted during the 18th and early 19th centuries, designed specifically to fit into the right-angle corner of a room.

Craftsmen typically utilised native hardwoods such as oak, elm, walnut, and mahogany, incorporating mortise and tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails, decorative burr veneers, and brass hinges.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, irregular backboards, hand-cast brass hardware, and natural oxidisation along the interior surfaces and joints.

Position the cabinet in an underutilised corner to add architectural structure, pairing it with contemporary artwork or neutral wall paint to contrast the deep wood grain.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
