A Dutch linen press cupboard, historically referred to as a kas or kast, originated in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Netherlands. Designed primarily to store household linens and bedding, these grand cabinets feature solid timber construction with an arched or carved cornice, upper panelled doors, and lower drawers.

Eighteenth-century linen presses were predominantly built from hardwoods such as oak or walnut, held together using hand-cut dovetail joints and wooden pegs. Secondary timbers like pine were used for interior drawer linings, while cast brass escutcheons and drop handles provided decorative hardware.

Authentic 18th-century presses show evidence of hand-planing on rear panels, hand-carved decorative mouldings, and irregular hand-cut dovetails on drawers. Original brass fitting marks, natural timber shrinkage around panel joints, and historic wear on the base confirm period origin.

A large oak press functions as a main focal piece in a bedroom, hallway, or dining room, providing storage space while adding depth to interior schemes. Pairing dark timber with neutral wall tones and minimal decor balances the overall visual weight of the carved wood.

Dust the timber surface regularly using a soft dry cloth, and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually to preserve the finish. Position the cabinet away from direct radiators and moist areas to prevent timber movement or surface cracking.
