Welsh food cupboard of a very unusual, if not unique, design. In one piece, the top part has a neat cornice above a central row of small drawers which are flanked by a pair of doors with gothic-shaped panels enclosing shelved cupboards. The lower part has an arched panel flanked by a pair of doors with square panels, enclosing larger cupboards, with the whole piece raised on shaped bracket feet. The shelves and backboards are also made of the same dense oak as the main carcase.
This form is a variation of a style found in Cardiganshire in the eighteenth century - see "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950", volume 2, plates 824 and 825

This useful and interesting piece has two hidden compartments (at least!) - one on the top and one beneath the lowest drawer (see close-ups)
Good reddish-brown colour and surface patination.
Width: 52.25 inches(55.5 at cornice);132.5 cms (141)
Depth: 20.25 inches(21.75 at cornice);51.5 cms (55.25)
Height: 62.5 inches; 159 cms.
