This seventeenth-century Welsh vernacular press cupboard is a large two-part storage piece constructed from pale oak with wood inlay and brass hardware, presenting a medium brown timber colour. The upper section features a moulded cornice above a pair of fielded panel doors decorated with star inlay motifs, flanked and separated by architectural reeded columns. Below, the base section incorporates nine working drawers fitted with original brass drop handles and escutcheons, set above shaped bracket feet. Measuring 204 cm high, 155 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, this substantial piece suits placement in a traditional hallway, bedroom, or living space as a statement storage wardrobe and chest of drawers. The robust timber construction and honest vernacular design anchor classic country house interiors while offering practical storage utility for modern homes.

A press cupboard is a traditional piece of storage furniture originating in the 16th and 17th centuries, historically used for storing household linens, clothing, and textiles.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from native hardwoods such as solid oak, often featuring hand-mortised joints, pegged timber construction, and decorative timber inlays.

Look for evidence of hand-hewn timber, wooden peg construction without modern screws, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, and natural oxidisation on internal timber surfaces.

Position the cupboard as a focal point in a hallway, dining space, or bedroom to contrast modern minimalist lines with warm, aged timber textures.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly once or twice per year to protect the timber and retain the original surface patina.
