Description

Silk ikats offering flexible ways to add a little verve to your decorative scheme. The vivid colours and shimmering silk are eye-catching and luxuriant. This lovely piece is a perfect example. With silk warps and wefts, it has a tactile texture this which glow and shimmers. Lovely combination of gold and magenta. Very nice condition. One or two minor light stains. Lined in a beautiful Russian chintz.

FAQs

Central Asian ikat, traditionally known as abrabandi or cloud-binding, flourished during the nineteenth century in major weaving centres such as Bukhara and Samarkand. Artisans created these complex fabrics using resist-dye techniques on silk warp threads before weaving them into panels used for garments, wall hangings, and room dividers.

Antique Uzbek ikats were constructed using hand-spun silk warps and cotton or silk weft threads woven on narrow handlooms. Because individual loom widths were narrow, multiple woven strips were aligned and stitched together longitudinally to form larger decorative panels.

Authentic pieces feature narrow stitched vertical panels, slight alignments along the pattern borders due to hand assembly, and natural dye shades derived from madder, indigo, and pomegranate. The reverse side typically shows soft, unprinted structural thread loops characteristic of genuine resist-dyed warp alignment.

Large silk ikat panels are commonly mounted on conservation board or hung from a sleek acrylic rod as statement wall art above a sideboard or bedhead. The bold geometric patterns complement both contemporary minimalist spaces and layered maximalist interiors.

Silk textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation and dye fading. Cleaning should strictly be left to professional textile conservators using dry techniques, avoiding water or chemical detergents.
