Antique Japanese Imari Scalloped Dish

Description

A finely decorated antique Japanese Imari dish of scalloped oval form, painted in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze blue with iron red and gilt highlights. The decoration features flowering branches and stylised floral reserves, arranged around a central cartouche and framed by shaped lobed edges.

The reverse is painted with characteristic underglaze blue motifs, including birds in flight, and bears a small hand-painted mark to the base. The painting is expressive and well balanced, with attractive contrast between the cobalt blue, warm iron red, and restrained gilding.

This is a decorative and versatile piece, suitable for display, table use, or as part of a mixed ceramics collection, and it sits comfortably within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. Originating in the seventeenth century, the style is renowned for its signature combination of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels enriched with gilding.

Pieces were shaped from kaolin clay, painted with cobalt oxide decoration, and coated in a translucent glaze before receiving an initial high-temperature firing. Overglaze enamels such as iron red and green, along with gold leaf, were subsequently applied and fixed during a second lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces often feature spur marks on the underside where the vessel rested during firing, minor hand-painted variations in decoration, and authentic surface wear to the gilt details. In addition, the underglaze cobalt blue typically exhibits depth and slight irregularities distinct from modern transfer prints.

Displaying the dish on an acrylic or wooden stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece creates a focused accent point. Alternatively, securing it to a wall in a vertical plate grouping incorporates historical colour and pattern into contemporary schemes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemical cleaners, dishwashers, and soaking, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
