Antique Royal Doulton Slaterware Jardinière

19th century
Description

A richly decorated antique Royal Doulton Slaterware jardinière of rounded form, raised on three short feet and fitted with twin loop handles. The body is decorated with the distinctive Slater technique, featuring finely tooled gilt spiral decoration over a contrasting ochre ground bordered by foliate bands and a pierced floral collar beneath the rim.

The upper section is further enriched with applied floral roundels and gilt detailing, while the interior and rim are finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze. The combination of texture, colour, and gilding creates a strong visual impact and is characteristic of Doulton’s high-quality decorative wares of this period.

This is a highly decorative and versatile piece, suitable for use as a jardinière, planter, or centrepiece, and it displays particularly well in both traditional and eclectic interiors.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Slater's patent lace-textured body with gilding: stoneware production from the late 1880s onward.
Impressed circular maker's stamp on the unglazed base: late Victorian Lambeth stoneware manufacture.
Incised artist monogram cut into the base clay: individual studio decorator at the pottery.
Light rubbing to the gilded raised rim and handles: natural handling wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Victorian Art Pottery jardinière is a stoneware piece by Royal Doulton, categorised as Slaterware. The rounded vessel features a textured gold body with ochre and black details, a deep cobalt blue glaze on the interior, handles, and tripod feet, and a dark floral band with white star-like motifs just below the rim. Twin loop handles curve upward from the sides, and the body rests securely on three short, outward-curving feet. Finely tooled gilt spiral patterns cover the main bulbous section, complemented by a pierced foliate collar and applied floral roundels around the upper neck. Practical dimensions are 18 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 21 cm deep. The jardinière functions well as a decorative planter or centrepiece, fitting naturally on a sideboard top or as a focal point within an English Country House or traditional interior setting.

Slaterware, patented by John Slater for Doulton Lambeth in the late 19th century, is a style of art pottery featuring impressed lace textures, gilded highlights, and hand-painted enamel decorations.

These items were predominantly crafted from dense stoneware or earthenware, decorated using lace-texturing techniques, glazes, gilding, and hand-applied floral enamels.

Authentic pieces typically feature the impressed Royal Doulton or Doulton Lambeth backstamp on the base, often accompanied by Doulton & Slaters Patent marks and impressed artist initials.

Position a jardiniere on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece filled with greenery, or leave it unplanted as a standalone decorative focal point.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners or prolonged submersion which could damage gilded or enamelled surfaces.
