Lignum vitae, known for its extreme density and self-lubricating natural oils, was frequently utilised in the 18th and 19th centuries for heavy-duty household and apothecary implements such as mortars, pulleys, and mallets.

While metal mortars were commonly cast in bronze or brass, domestic and apothecary versions were also turned from dense hardwoods like lignum vitae, boxwood, and oak to prevent splitting during heavy crushing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, deep natural patination from handling and use, characteristic grain patterns of dense tropical hardwoods, and historical wear consistent with manual grinding.

Placed upon a kitchen shelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard, such items add historical texture and organic warmth, contrasting effectively against contemporary stone or minimalist surfaces.

To preserve the timber and maintain the historical patina, keep wooden objects away from direct heat sources and moisture, occasionally treating the surface with microcrystalline wax rather than modern oils.
