Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire figures were mass-produced lead-glazed earthenware ornaments made in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 19th century. They were created as accessible decorative items for Victorian homes, featuring depictions of folklore figures, royalty, historical characters, and animals.

These ornaments were produced using press-moulds filled with earthenware clay. After an initial firing, the white or cream body was decorated with overglaze enamel paints and fired a second time at a lower temperature to fix the colours.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally feature a flat back designed to sit against a wall or mantelpiece, small release holes from the moulding process, glaze craze lines, soft wear to the unglazed base ring, and hand-painted enamel details that show slight irregularity.

Staffordshire figures add visual texture and historical interest when arranged on a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a curated bookshelf display, or paired alongside modern ceramics on a sideboard top.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft brush. Avoid submerging earthenware in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as water can enter fine glaze cracks and damage unglazed interiors or overglaze paint layers.
