Grand Tour intaglios are miniature plaster, sulphur, or glass paste casts of classical carved gems and ancient sculptures, collected by travellers on the European Grand Tour during the 18th and 19th centuries as portable cultural souvenirs.

These miniature reliefs were traditionally cast using fine plaster of Paris, sulphur, or coloured glass pastes, often set into custom wooden frames, folding books, or leather-bound cases lined with velvet.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related patina on the framing materials, hand-turned timber or leather cases, crisp detail in the cast figures, and historical backing papers or labels indicative of nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

These framed collections add classical scholarly depth and texture to interior spaces, working particularly well when displayed on library walls, study bookshelves, or styled alongside dark wood furniture and vintage globes.

Plaster and sulphur casts are exceptionally fragile and sensitive to moisture and direct sunlight. They should be kept behind protective glass in stable humidity conditions, dusting them gently with a soft, dry brush when necessary.
