Exceptional Pair of Gillows Rosewood Stands.

19th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A rare and exceptional near pair of Rosewood Stands, the only difference being the small block to the centre of the columbs. Dating from the early 19th Century with cluster columns, lovely shaped dolphin feet and beautiful top with superbly shaped inverted corners. It is highly likely that these stands were made by Gillows of Lancaster & London, the design is usually attributed to them. The quality of the craftsmanship along with the use of timbers and the wonderful burnished colour, in particular that of the tops make these tables special.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to hold tall candles or candelabra, torcheres evolved into decorative display stands for sculpture, urns, and indoor greenery during the Regency and Victorian periods.

Dense hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany were favoured during this era, often featuring turned columns, carved tripod bases, and brass structural fittings.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit precise joinery, finely turned cluster columns or balusters, rich wood grain, and occasionally stamped maker marks such as GILLOWS LANCASTER along the timber framework.

Positioning a pair of stands on either side of a mantelpiece, framing an doorway, or occupying empty alcoves with sculpture or botanical displays adds structure and historic contrast to a contemporary setting.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
