This large garden urn stands in a weathered grey finish, presenting a heptagonal form from the rim down to the stepped pedestal base. Cast from reconstituted stone in a Gothic Revival style, the piece displays visible weathering marks across its surfaces, including lichen growth and aged patination. The seven-sided bowl incorporates carved Gothic tracery panels with trefoil motifs along the frieze, sitting upon a faceted support and a square foundation block. Measuring 76 cm high with a 66 cm diameter and a 48 cm square base, the urn accommodates a variety of outdoor planting arrangements. Positioning the piece in a garden, on a terrace, or beside a path introduces a traditional architectural accent to exterior spaces.

FAQs

Gothic Revival garden ornaments gained popularity during the 19th century in Britain, drawing inspiration from medieval church architecture, trefoil motifs, and pointed arches. These designs were favoured in formal Victorian gardens to add architectural structure and historical charm.

Traditional garden urns are commonly crafted from natural carved sandstone, limestone, or cast reconstituted stone. Cast stone allows for detailed mouldings and forms a durable surface that weathers naturally over time when exposed to the elements.

Authentic aged cast stone displays natural patination, including lichen growth, moss, and surface weathering accumulated over decades. Original pieces often feature crisp architectural details like tracery or fluting along with evidence of historic lime or mortar construction.

A Gothic stone urn works well as a focal point at the end of a garden path, centred on a patio, or flanking an entranceway. It can be left unplanted as an architectural sculpture or filled with trailing ivy, boxwood, or seasonal flora.

Preserving outdoor stone involves ensuring clear drainage holes to prevent water pooling and freeze-thaw damage during winter months. Avoid harsh pressure washing, as natural lichen and moss patination contribute to the historical character of the piece.
