Roll-up chess boards and portable sets gained popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as travel became more accessible, allowing players to enjoy the game on the move.

Traditional chess sets were frequently crafted from various hardwoods such as boxwood, ebony, mahogany, and rosewood, often featuring hand-turned pieces and wooden or leather folding boards.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining the wood grain, tool marks from hand-turning, wear patterns on the playing surface, and the style of the pieces, which often reflect specific period designs.

A vintage chess set can be displayed fully set up on a coffee table, side table, or open bookshelf to add an element of interactive intellect and classic character to a room.

Preservation involves keeping the items out of direct sunlight to prevent wood fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and occasionally treating the wood with a microcrystalline wax.
