Heavy cast metal doorstops became popular in Victorian Britain during the 19th century as homes grew larger and draughty coal-heated rooms required functional yet decorative accessories to keep interior doors open.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional sand-casting techniques, resulting in heavy, solid brass or bronze objects that often featured weighted iron bases or filled interiors for added stability.

Authentic period examples exhibit deep patination, sand-casting imperfections, hand-filed seams, and wear consistent with age, whereas modern reproductions often feel lighter and lack genuine historic oxidisation.

This piece can be utilised functionally to hold open heavy interior doors or displayed purely as a sculptural object on a bookshelf, hearth, or console table to add metallic texture and historic character.

Preserve the historic surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip away desirable natural ageing and patination.
